The Ouroborus, or serpent who bites its tail, symbolises Nature’s cyclicity. It represents the union of the two opposing princicples : Heaven, (the circle) and Eartth (the serpent), day and night, good and evill, the Chinese Yang and Yin. Its androgynous nature is symbolised by the serpent, or sometimes dragon-serpent, which embodies sexual union within itself, the permanent self-fertilizer, as shown by its tail in its mouth. It is the perpetual transmutation of death into life. As an image of the circle. It is a reminder of the wheel, apparently immobile because it turns only on itself. But its movement is never-ending, because it renews itself perpetually. As a universal monitor, it is known as one of the most ancient images of the world.
