The Bookseller’s Portal. The allegory of man who must conquer the dragon is a constant feature of medieval imagination. As in the St George and St Michael legends, the knight’s battle with the dragon is that of the fight between good and evil, or to be exact, the battle of creative forces against chaos. We come accross the dread of this battle in all cultures and religions, in the most varied of forms. In fact, it’s a question of the individual’s triumph over the dark, negative, always unconscious, side of his personality. The hero has to recognise that the shadow side exists and that he can benefit from its strength. He must keep in tune with his destructive power if he wishes to be strong enough to defeat the dragon. In other words, no-one can triumph without having first overcome and assimilated his shadow side. The dragon is first and foremost within us.
