Woad, also known as Pastel, is a plant used for dyeing. It brought wealth to the region of Picardy in the Middle Ages. An incomparable blue tincture (« blue gold of Picardy ») is extracted from its leaves. When the leaves are changed by the dyeing process, they are transformed into little balls which are called « Cocagnes » in French : thus the expression « Cocagne Land ».
