Directly descended from ancient Egypt, the Zodiac is a constant feature of medieval art. It reflects how time is made sacred and tells of human activity. In taking account of the cyclic dimension of time, mankind is able to raise the level of his consciousness of the Divine energy kindling him. He can reach this state of consciousness by constantly renewing his confrontation of the same questions and by a perception of Nature’s rythms. Amiens Cathedral’s Zodiac is the most remarkable stone « calendar » in France. The upper row demonstrates the 12 signs of the Zodiac, associated with the labours corresponding to the 12 months of the year in the lower row. The division of the year into 12 astrological signs corresponds to the 12 constellations which rise above the horizon with the sun during its annual cycle.
