Gargoyles appear at the beginning of the 12th century. They were used to divert rainwater and thus avoid its overflow on to the stonework. The Latin root of the word gargoyle means « gullet » or « throat ». Often grotesque and terrifying, they occupy the heights of cathedrals and other buildings of the middle ages. Could gargoyles be a survival of pagan belief ? Or, in case the love of God wasn’t enough to keep mankind away from sin, did they lean over the medieval faithful in order to terrorise them and thus point out the gates of hell to them? Bur it is also possible that gargoyles may have played the role of church guardians, serving as magical bogeys to scare off the devil and protect the people.
