In the Book of the Apocalypse, St John evokes the scene of 24 crowned elders singing the glory of Christ in the firmament. This subject of Middle Ages sculpture was used here with a spark of originality, because the venerable elders are transformed into musicians, using this complex instrument, the Orgaistrum. The Organistrum is a type of viola with a wheel which made its appearance in the 9th century. There was a model for two people, about 1,80 m in length shown here and modeled on that of the portal of Santiago de Compostella Cathedral. The artist has transmitted the musicians’ harmony and conviviality in their earthly activity, at the same time showing that their souls, turned towards the hereafter, are in close union.
