The Architect

The word architect comes from the Greek „arkhitekton“ which means chief constructor.  In effect the architect has always been the one who co-ordinates the building trades and designs the building plans.  He is the one who organises, models or adapts  space according to the main interests of his contemporaries.

The word architect comes from the Greek „arkhitekton“ which means chief constructor. In effect the architect has always been the one who co-ordinates the building trades and designs the building plans. Up to the peak of the industrial era, architecture occupied above all the domain of the spiritual and the military. In the 19th century it put itself at the service of the building industry and progress. Traditional materials (cut stone, wood ...) were dethroned little by little with the emergence of steel, glass, and later cement. Henceforth its achievements would reflect material and economic preoccupations. We observe today that, conscious of the role of the master of space which he plays, the architect sees that his role is no longer confined simply to building, but also to the contribution of meaning tin the lives of his contemporaries.
