The Blacksmith

The word forge comes from the Latin « fabrica » which designated the place where minerals were treated in order to transform them into metals.  The Blacksmith worked matter heated until red with the help of a hammer whose shocks were designed to improve its mechanical qualities, or to shape it to the determined form and dimensions.

The word forge comes from the Latin « fabrica » which designated the place where minerals were treated in order to transform them into metals. Since the time of antiquity we hear of a god of fire and of metal : the Egyptian god Ptah, the Greek god Hephaistos, the Roman god Vulcan. The belief that a horshoe brings good luck gets its origin frorm the following legend. One day the devil asked a saint blacksmith to shoe his forked feet. The saint hurt the devil so much that he vowed never to enter anywhere he’d see a horshoe. The principal actiivity of a blacksmith was to shoe horses and to a lesser extent the fabrication of iron objects, soaking tools and repairs. With the disappearance of the horse as a means of transsport and the abandon of rural areas in the 19th century, blacksmiths have all but disappeared .
