The stone cutter

Stonecutting is perhaps the oldest of man’s trades, for the main evidence from pre-history ar eroughly carved silex used as arms or tools. All civilisations have left stone monuments which, with the accuracy of their forms, the art of stone assembly radiated intelligence and kindled spiritual elevation. The Cheops Pyramid,the Temple of Borobudur, St Michael’s Mount are so many different witnesses of exceptional collective work, where stone cutters could express their art. There, the tension between the stones is pushed to its extreme in the evermore elevated and audacious cross ribs. We are transported upwards and, as it were, maintained there by an invisible link with Heaven.
