This enigmatic masterpiece worked in white stone of French 14th century sculpture is called Virgin with bird. It can be seen in the church of Notre-Dame-Du-Marchuret in Riom (Puy du Dôme) in the first Western Chapel which is dedicated to St James, patron saint of the wealthy Tanners’ Guild. A copy is built into the pillar. The sculpture came from the workshops of Jean de Berry vying with the Dukes of Dijon’s court workshops. This delicate Virgin of the Gothic age stands, holding the child on her left arm. It gives illustration to a legend acording to which, during the Flight into Egypt, the Child Jesus moulded birds in clay and then gave them life by breathing on them. The bird held by the child pecks his finger. The sculptor is unknown and its exact date is uncertain
